I attended and was given the opportunity to speak at a
hearing conducted by the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission
Tuesday, October 3rd, regarding, primarily, the proposed drilling of at
least one well in Rulison, at a former underground nuclear detonation site.
I didn't wish to consume valuable time with off-topic issues even though the
meeting was open to it, so I simply summarized the plight of the elk which
winter forage and calve on the grounds where EnCana is now drilling and will
be drilling over winter. I also distributed information cards with this
site's address to each of the Commissioners, and briefly described the
nature of this blogging project..
Our neighbor that brought up the issue of well water sampling last week has
said that EnCana is performing domestic well sampling this week. I plan to
learn the extent of the profiling during the landowner meeting which has
been scheduled for next Tuesday.
I invited Garfield County Commissioner Tresi Houpt; Garfield County Oil and
Gas Liaison, Judy Jordan; and Jim Rada, of the county's air quality
department, so as to include them in discussions during this meeting and to
suggest it as a reference point for any further communication from
landowners relative to this issue. It looks like six families will be
attending, with one no-show due to poor health and travel.
Another neighbor phoned Saturday to mention that the
elk have moved down from the high country, and are now present in the area -
about thirty cows and two bulls. I've not seen them so cannot corroborate
this information. But, if they're down, I expect it won't be long before
I'll see them. |
