The first rig goes up on Schwartz Property to the North West of our property - about a quarter mile away. |
Fall colors sweep across Summerhawk Valley, just to the west of the new rig. Tonight, as the sun began to set, wild turkeys rang in the cool autumn evening. Divide Creek - and site of the still-mitigated gas seep meanders through the bottom of the valley. |

I found out about the presence of 32
proposed wells in stages of inquiry, begun by the casual mention of two
wells by an EnCana employee a couple of weeks ago. Days later, we learned of a rig
move down the road. [landowner notification of rig moves is an important
advancement in landowner relations, and, considering that the numerous
components trucked separately, which make up a rig move and which dominate most
of the narrow drivable surface of our county 'farm-to-market' roads, I believe this is an
advancement which helps increase the safety of all. [of note: the county
road servicing these wells was re-asphalted in 2006, after only two + years
of misery dodging enormous potholes and on-coming traffic] I got a call from a neighbor this morning which raised the question as to whether EnCana has performed base-line water tests on neighboring domestic water wells prior to the drilling of the first natural gas well. A baseline test may be in the works - but so far no one knows. Baseline tests are another advancement. In 2003, this was a cost which fell to the landowner. A meeting has been scheduled between landowners and EnCana's managers for late next week. This will give everyone an opportunity (the first formal, collective opportunity) to ask questions and learn more about these scheduled events. So far, information has been hit-and-miss, circulated as speculation among landowners and fielded on a one-on-one basis by EnCana's landowner relations department. A letter noting the specifics of these operations is forthcoming as well. |

This entry was added after the landowner meeting held on October 02, 2007. At that meeting, we learned there was not to be 32 wells, there are to be 40 wells drilled. I am working on the Sunday update for Week 3, with other important details of this meeting, but, today, I have clarified the homepage introduction to reflect this new information. |
