Gunnison Road Trip!

300 and some miles through Grand Junction, Delta, Montrose and Gunnison

Open vistas of Western Colorado

For me, one of the most thrilling aspects of a road trip is topping out over wide-open unexplored country.

I rented a little red hoss for the trip to Gunnison and thoroughly enjoyed the journey - whooshing along like an eagle sweeping low over the valley. I have such a Gypsy heart. Give me a vague destination, a thermos of coffee and an atlas and I'm happy as a bug in a rug. For me it's about the going - not so much the getting there. Like a dog, I just enjoy sticking my head out the window and letting my ears flap in the wind!

Bonus!  KEKB played one of my favorite songs I hadn't heard in absolute ages, so I got to  wail along to the lyrics of  "The Perfect Country and Western Song" by David Allen Coe. You just never hear that song anymore.

The Egyptian Theater in Delta
...a little piece of ciche hometown wowness!

A dude in a bear suit! What a surprise! He posed for me when he saw me point to the camera. Thanks bear guy - at least I think it's a guy....

On the whole drive into Gunnison, the only rugged "mountain" looking stretch was for three miles after the lake.

A shady afternoon in a cozy old neighborhood

I dig amphibians - and frog folk always brighten my day, so imagine the grin when I saw this super cool sculpture of a frog resting near some cattails! What a treat!

More mountains of Western Colorado

The HooDoos of Black Mesa Lake

This is Black Mesa Lake - it seems small from this perspective, but it is huge. There is a boat out near the island (center) and in the photo below, there are several boats near the distant shore - I'm talking 16 footers or better and you can't even see them!

I listened to a riveting Ron Paul interview on NPR while driving around the lake in which he pointed out that America goes to war in the interest of other nation's right to democratic rule, yet, in our own country, he says anyone who isn't a democrat or a republican has a pretty hard time of finding equal footing in the electoral process. Hard to refute. As a registered independent I have found that to be true. This election, I get to decide between two candidates polarized democrats and republicans have pre-screened and selected for me. Thrillsville.
